On either side of Fontana Cottage, you’ll find two historic freshwater springs, each offering a glimpse into the island’s past. l-Għajn il-Kbira, also known as the Washer’s Spring, features 16th- century arched shelters once used by locals to wash their clothes.
On the other side is l-Għajn ta’ Bendu, a smaller spring recently restored in 2023 and now open to the public. Visitors can also observe the ancient irrigation system, with stone gutters still transporting water from the Kercem Valley to the Fontana spring – a remarkable reminder of the area’s enduring heritage.
